For the Casserole:

  • 1 loaf of French bread (or brioche), cut into cubes
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp salt

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)


Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Casserole

  1. Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and place the cubed bread inside.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, sugars, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  3. Pour the mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are coated.
  4. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (at least 6-8 hours).

Step 2: Add the Topping & Bake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, melted butter, and cinnamon.
  3. Sprinkle the topping over the soaked bread mixture.
  4. Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, until golden brown and set.

Step 3: Serve & Enjoy

  1. Let the casserole cool for 5 minutes.
  2. Serve warm with maple syrup, powdered sugar, or fresh berries.
