Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups warm water (about 110°F) Make sure the water is warm, not hot.
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or oil
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 6 to 7 cups all-purpose flour Use spooned flour to avoid packing.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, stir the warm water and sugar until the sugar dissolves. Sprinkle the yeast on top and wait 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add melted butter, salt, and 3 cups of flour to the mixture. Stir to combine.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour, a cup at a time, until the dough is soft and slightly sticky.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.
  6. Punch down the dough and divide it into two loaves. Shape each into a loaf and place in greased 9×5-inch pans.
  7. Cover and let rise again until doubled, about 30 to 45 minutes.
Baking
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  2. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the tops are golden and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.
  3. Remove from pans and cool on a rack before slicing.

Notes

For best results, let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place. Measure flour carefully and use water at the right temperature.
