Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
Wet Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cut into cubes Important for achieving flaky biscuits.
  • 3/4 cup milk or buttermilk
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
Cheddar Cheese
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese Freshly shredded melts better.
Garlic Butter Topping
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, or 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 pinch salt

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt, and garlic powder.
  3. Add the cold butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to work it into the flour until the mix looks like coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the shredded cheddar cheese.
  5. In a small bowl, mix the milk and beaten egg, then pour into the dry mix and stir until just combined. Do not overmix; the dough will be sticky.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto the baking sheet, making about 12 biscuits, spaced for rising.
Baking
  1. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes until the tops are golden and the centers are set.
  2. While the biscuits bake, mix the melted butter, garlic powder, parsley, and pinch of salt for the topping.
  3. When the biscuits come out of the oven, brush them with the garlic butter immediately to allow it to soak in.
  4. Serve warm.

Notes

Use cold butter for flaky biscuits and avoid overmixing. Freshly shredded cheddar is recommended.
