Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Make slices across the loaf, about 1 inch apart, and do not cut all the way through.
- Drizzle some olive oil into each cut and lightly season with salt and pepper.
- Insert a tomato slice and a mozzarella slice into each cut, tucking in a small basil leaf with each.
Baking
- Wrap the loaf in foil and bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until the cheese melts.
- Unwrap and bake for an additional 3 to 5 minutes to crisp the top slightly, watching it closely to prevent burning.
- Drizzle with balsamic glaze if desired, then slice and serve warm.
Notes
Serve with a simple green salad. Warm bread tastes best and pairs well with tomato soup or a charcuterie board.
