  • to taste pepper
  • 1 small chopped onion Finely chopped for mixing.
For the Gravy
  • 2 tablespoons oil For browning meatballs.
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour To make roux.
  • 2 cups beef broth Add slowly while stirring.
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce or pinch of salt
  • to taste black pepper

Method

Preparation
  1. Mix ground meat, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, pepper, and chopped onion in a bowl until just combined.
  2. Shape into meatballs approximately 1 to 1.5 inches in size.
Cooking Meatballs
  1. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat and brown the meatballs on all sides for 6 to 8 minutes. Remove meatballs from skillet and set aside.
Making the Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, add butter and flour. Stir to make a roux and cook for 1 minute.
  2. Slowly add beef broth while stirring. Then add Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, and black pepper. Bring to a low simmer.
Combining
  1. Add browned meatballs back into the gravy, cover, and let them simmer for 10 to 15 minutes until cooked through and gravy thickens. Adjust salt and pepper to taste.
Serving
  1. Serve smothered meatballs over mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered egg noodles, and garnish with chopped parsley if desired.

Notes

Do not overmix meat to keep meatballs tender. Brown meatballs well for added flavor. Adjust gravy thickness as needed by simmering uncovered or adding broth/milk.
